Practice and learn the blues!

I have played for many years - and have never really been much of a lead player. I used to be in bands and such, but was always the rhythm guy, and for the most part was happy with that. For the last 3 years I have just been playing at home - and since I haven't been hearing much popular music that I like, I started tinkering with blues. I discovered lots of blues backing tracks on the net, and started soloing over them, and recorded the results on my computer. Doing this has improved my lead playing IMMENSELY! I recently saw an ad for a band looking for a lead player and decided to try out - thinking that I surely was not good enough, but to my amazement was hired on the spot - and the band is NOT a blues band - its a classic rock group.

So if you are wanting to improve your lead playing skills, go back to basics and learn to play the blues - it will really help get you going!

I'd say I agree 99% :-) A degree of repetition is needed to train your fingers to work without you thinking about it, but other than that, it's about mixing it up. I've struggled for years with being at work / away from guitars most of the day then only having limited practice time. I used to find myself going over the same scales etc over and over, never progressing to anything else.

You gotta mix it up and maintain interest/variety to progress.

I agree with you all the way... there is something called god given talent, but if someone works hard enough with a certain level of focus and determination, then anything is possible! I've known guys who initially laughed at the idea of guitaring, but ended up becoming masters!!

I'm a beginner though..

So did I....

That's not the point I'm making - it's that it takes a lot of motivation, dedication and an investment of time.
