Learning to play guitar brings great enjoyment to many adults and children.Especially for adults learning to play is often something they’ve always wanted to do but haven’t due to lack of time.

I want to help you learn to play guitar faster, so I’m going to reveal 3 ways you can get started for nothing by teaching yourself to play guitar on the web.

What is the Fastest Method to Learn Guitar

The quickest method to learn guitar is likely by videos. When I was first learning how to play I used to use a book. I found this to be far to cumbersome, and I was never sure if I was learning things the right way.

If there was access to the web when I was starting out I’m sure I could have used all the different resources and sites available to beginners now to learn more much faster.

Both of these websites offer a wealth of Information, and watching someone do something gives you much better guidance then guessing if you’re doing it right from a book.

WorkShopLive Guitar Lessons

Sticking with the video realm there are some really good <a href="http://www.guitarlessonsreviewed.com/"target="_blank" onclick="javascript:urchinTracker ('/outbound/article/www.guitarlessonsreviewed.com');">guitar video lessons available online at a new music lesson membership site, Work Shop Live. You can visit their site and give it a test drive with the free lessons they offer by signing up.

From all the online membership sites I’ve looked at, Work Shop Live has to be the best. The videos are shot from different angles so you get a view of what the strumming hand and fingering hand are doing at the same time, this is crucial to ensure you have proper technique.

The guitar is one of the more fascinating instruments to learn to play and is normally featured in most bands. This creation can only begin after you have mastered playing notes on the fretboard and understanding the fretboard charting process. Guitars, in the hands of expert players, are the heart and souls of most bands.

Observing an excellent guitar player will sometimes bring chills to your spine as you marvel and think to yourself. I wonder if that could be me? Yes, you too can play like that!

One of the things you will have to learn first is how to position your fingers to play notes on the fretboard. Learning hand and finger positions is where beginners start and building finger strength and flexibility is the first order of learning. Learning <a href="http://www.guitartutorpro.com/go.php?offer=ronven&pid=1"target="_blank" title="Guitar Tutor Pro" onclick="javascript:urchinTracker ('/outbound/article/www.guitartutorpro.com');">fretboard notes is an essential part of learning to play the guitar, and understanding the fretboard charts will allow you to move beyond playing open chords.

Professional Instructions

There are many options available to learn how to read, understand and play notes on the fretboard. If you are looking for the best results, the recommendation is to hire a professional to guide your progress and teach you the proper way to play correctly. By starting with an instructor you will be able to concentrate on practicing finger positions with a second pair of eyes there for support. Your instructor will correct your mistakes as well as give you additional tips to help your learning process. Using these tips from the start will help improve your skills faster and give you more experience in a shorter amount of time.

Before selecting an instructor, decide how much time, energy and money you are willing to invest in learning how to play the guitar. Then look for someone with experience that is also friendly and has a list of successful students for you to talk with. Select your instructor with your music goals in mind and make sure they understand what level you would like to reach.

You may start by learning the fretboard chart and how to position your fingers according to the chart. You are required to memorize the charts, finger positions and beats to play the proper notes. After gaining experience you will be able to see the chart in your mind as your fingers glide across the fretboard. This basic step will require a lot of practice to learn finger control and proper note sounds before you can progress to the next stage of <a href="http://www.guitartutorpro.com/go.php?offer=ronven&pid=1"target="_blank" title="Guitar Tutor Pro" onclick="javascript:urchinTracker ('/outbound/article/www.guitartutorpro.com');">learning to play guitar.

When you understand and have mastered playing the proper notes with the guitar you will be amazed at how simple playing the guitar really is. You will be able to change sounds, create new sounds, and enhance any songs by simply moving your fingers along the fretboard.

They will be able to hear the difference as you practice and learn to play new songs!

The origins of today’s guitar can be traced back a great many generations with many of the ancient instruments having elements rather like the modern instrument. Although the guitar most frequently has six or twelve strings there are other types which can have four, five, seven, eight and ten strings. For many decades this musical instrument has played the lead role in the changing styles of popular music and even after the invention of sysnths, and samplers, the guitar is the predominant instrument in many types of music such as rock and blues.

With so many ways of writing music on home computers you may be surprised to learn that for a great many years now the popularity of the guitar has been steadily increasing with more and more people buying and trying to learn how to play <a href="http://music.freewebsitetemplates4u.com/archives/category/music/guitar/"target="_blank" title="Learn About Guitars" onclick="javascript:urchinTracker ('/outbound/article/music.freewebsitetemplates4u.com');">the guitar. While many have the aim of being a rock star the larger number just wish to learn how to play well for the enjoyment of it.

Most people learn to play the guitar by purchasing a teach yourself guitar book. There is a selection of books which include audio CDs which make the learning all the easier. These publications often show you a variety of basic chords and power chords as well as bar chords and a few basic songs.

A superb way to learn how to play is by buying a DVD or, better still, an interactive DVD which can teach you several different styles and techniques. As well as tuition DVDs offering basic lessons it is possible to purchase specialist versions which explain how to play in a similar fashion to a successful guitarist. Usually these include a selection of tracks by that performer so that you can master their techniques.

As well as learning from interactive DVDs on family home computer you can also get guitar tuition online. Some tutors offer lessons on a personal basis via webcams and downloadable material. Many people play the computer game “Guitar Hero” and you can even get a similar thing online but for real guitars. Line 6 offers an incredible monthly membership scheme which has a massive list of songs to play along to with or without the guitar track.

Electric Vs Acoustic

The acoustic guitar is available in a number of types but all need a sound box behind the strings to increase the sound of the vibrating strings. A large number of people have had sight of a classical guitar and nearly all acoustic guitars are of this style, however there are many other types available for example the Resonator.

The electric guitar is the best known type but it is found in such a wide variety of styles that you are very much restricted by your own imagination. There are a few classic designs such as Fender’s Telecaster and Stratocaster and Gibson’s Les Paul which are the most famous. But, with digital technology, these three classic guitars and more can be found in another guitar called the Variax which uses computer modeling to create the sound of the instrument to sound almost the same as the original.

In the past most folk learned guitar on an acoustic model but the price of electric guitars has fallen so much that it is now possible to purchase a full package, guitar, amplifier, strap and tuition book/CD, for nearly the same price as a quality acoustic.

Remember if you are planning to learn <a href="http://musical-instruments.theatozof.com/Guitars/LearningHowToPlayGuitar.php"target="_blank" title="Learn How To Play Guitar" onclick="javascript:urchinTracker ('/outbound/article/musical-instruments.theatozof.com');">how to play guitar it is imperative that youstart at the beginning! Way too many people assume that they can master a guitar classic immediately, but, with a just a little effort and time you can be on your way to becoming a the greatest guitar master.

After first purchasing my guitar the majority of my time was spent surfing around the Internet searching for videos and tutorials that were free to help me learn to play. When I first started it was exciting because I was starting from scratch so each new chord or technique I learned was bringing me closer to being able to play a full song.

How ever after a couple of months of exhausting the majority of free videos and tutorials I could find on the Internet. It was at this I point I thought I was going to need something more if I wanted to progress further as a guitar player.

A friend of mine had been taking private guitar lessons from a local teacher, the down side was it cost $20 bucks a lesson, once a week. How ever the cost seemed steep to me, and I was interested in learning to play faster. I had time and was eager to learn and once a week wasn’t going to cater to that.

I figured that there are probably some paid alternatives online I could explore. I started doing my research to learn more about the guitar lesson products that were out there for people like me to learn from home.

The best one I found was after reading a <a href="http://www.guitarlessonsreviewed.com/learn-and-master-guitar-review.html"target="_blank" onclick="javascript:urchinTracker ('/outbound/article/www.guitarlessonsreviewed.com');">Learn and master guitar review. This dvd course seemed to be the Cadillac of learn guitar programs, and it was priced competitively for how much content it gave you.

I decided not to jump in right away, instead I just kept looking at more reviews. I came across numerous guitar member sites, ebooks, and download courses none of which seemed to interest me as much.

No matter how many sites I read and message boards I went to it always seemed to come back to that Learn and master guitar review. I decided it was worth a try, they had a money back guarantee so if I wasn’t satisfied with the course after I got it I’d request a refund.

It took only about a week for my copy of Learn and Master guitar to get here and right out of the box I was impressed. The packaging, the practice book, everything looked very professional. I popped in the first dvd to get a look at the lessons and the video quality was awesome.

I have been using Learn and Master Guitar for several months and my technique and guitar playing has come a long way. Without it I assume I’d just be playing the same handful of chords and being frustrated that maybe I just couldn’t learn how to play the guitar.

When you think of playing the guitar you probably have images of being on stage in front of an adoring crowd or jamming in the studio, a party or just round at someone’s place.

It’s always a happy place where everyone’s having a great party – right?

Well this Thursday I’m playing in the church for my girlfriend’s mother’s memorial service. It’s a very sad time for the family and has been since she died from cancer at the beginning of this year.

It is an honour for me to have been asked to do this even though it is also a sombre task. Music can be beautiful and moving when it’s used to express sadness and loss and I intend to put everything I have into this piece which has been specifically written by a family member who cannot attend and perform it himself.

This will be my second church performance, the first was a few years ago when I played the Cavatina (the Deer Hunter theme) at a wedding.

As if being slightly drunk wasn’t enough to contend with – I’d tuned the guitar and rehearsed with the organist before the service. Somehow when the church filled up with people it managed to de-tune my guitar. It was either the change in temperature when the church filled up with people – or the almighty was sending me a test…

Of course I didn’t realise this had happened until I played the first note for the actual performance so I had to bend the notes so that they were in tune with the organ..

I managed to do it but it’s not something I’d like to have to do again.

I can just hope that the same thing doesn’t happen this time as it is not an occasion that can be glossed over with good humour and ‘make for a good story’

I’ve just read a very encouraging post on another blog about what it actually takes for anyone to master anything they want. It has little to do with starting early or having the right genes – although these things certainly help they are not required.

It’s objections like “It’s too late/I’m too old” and “I’m not naturally talented enough” that keep people from pushing themselves to achieve their full potential, settle for mediocrity or worse still give up.

When learning a musical instrument it does certainly help to have some natural ability but not as much as some may think. Perfect pitch can be developed with enough practice and the same goes for virtuoso status. To put the whole natural talent argument into context consider this quote from Kathy Sierra’s post on “how to become an expert”

“Apparently God-given talent, natural “gifts”, and genetic predispositions just aren’t all they’re cracked up to be. Or at least not in the way most of us always imagined. It turns out that rather than being naturally gifted at music or math or chess or whatever, a superior performer most likely has a gift for concentration, dedication, and a simple desire to keep getting better. In theory, again, anyone willing to do what’s required to keep getting better WILL get better.”

So can just anyone become a master guitarist by simply practicing more than the next person?

Not necessarily – you have to do the right kind of practice. Don’t just repeat the same stuff over and over and wait for your cat to bark. In business a definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result – this applies to everything.

More often than not what keeps people from achieving true greatness when it comes to mastering a musical instrument is the tendency to skim over the harder and mundane parts.

To progress to greatness you need to spend time on the not-fun-but-essential-to-get-better tasks. As with anything highly desirable and hard to achieve in life there are difficult, un-enjoyable aspects that need to be tackled. Look at it this way – if there is something you tend to skip over in your practice routine or in your learning package, chances are that’s what you need to be focusing on to get to the next level.

Here is a practical example you can use – unplug that electric and get on your acoustic until you can play those chord progressions, scales and bar chords flawlessly and with ease. Even replace the strings with a heavier gauge and raise the action (the distance between the strings and the fretboard).

Do this with the intention of mastering a very hard to play guitar and when you get back on your electric I promise you that you’ll experience guitar playing enjoyment you’ll want to repeat every time you sit down (or stand up) to practice, record and perform.

It’s when you put yourself through the mill like this and tackle those difficult tasks until they are easy that the real payoff comes in. As you develop higher levels of skill and become more advanced you start to experience heightened enjoyment and even a ‘flow state’ which Wikipedia describe as:

“The mental state of operation in which the person is fully immersed in what he or she is doing, characterized by a feeling of energized focus, full involvement, and success in the process of the activity.”

If you apply yourself and resolve to go the extra mile with your practice then you will come across turning points and milestones with no limits to how far you can go.

Sounds simple doesn’t it?

And it is – the idea is anyway, carrying it out is what separates the greats from the mediocres. Which one are you?

And as for the “It’s too late/I’m too old” excuse – I’ll ????????????quote Kathy again here where she ends her post on using a topic close to my heart to illustrate that this is no excuse:

“And if the neuroscientists are right, you can create new brain cells–by learning (and not being stuck in a dull cubicle)–at virtually any age. Think about it… if you’re 30 today, if you take up the guitar tomorrow, you’ll have been playing for TWENTY years by the time you’re 50. You’ll be kicking some serious guitar butt. And if you’re 50 today, there’s no reason you can’t be kicking guitar butt at 70. What are you waiting for?”

You don’t have to be in your early 20s to be a rock star – just ask Mick Jagger

Now – are you ready to go all the way to the top?

If not what’s your excuse? Post it here as a comment!
