A Quick Checklist to Tell if Easy Guitar Lessons are Really Worth Your Time

Easy guitar lessons are all over the web. But how can you tell if your time invested won’t turn out to be a waste when you could be learning quicker elsewhere. This is where a bit of up front investigation can seriously pay off in time and possibly money later down the line because lets face it – no one likes wasting time or cash do they?

Something else to take into consideration with easy to learn guitar lessons is that they may in fact be too easy and slowing you down. When I started out I learnt at a very rapid pace due to already playing two other instruments and having a natural aptitude for music.

While it is true that you should really take your time to learn the material properly – some people learn quicker than others so there really is no ‘1-size-fits-all’ way to approach this. That’s why my preference for learning the guitar is a self paced computer or online course with plenty of multimedia and interactive features.

Here is my checklist for what I look for in a guitar learning package:

Plenty of tablature – it is impossible to learn the guitar without seeing what chord positions and solos look like on the neck of the guitar. Traditional music notation is important as well but tab is a must.

Video demonstrations – if like me you are not learning and playing straight classical guitar then there are some things you just need to see demonstrated, particularly riffs and fancy chord progressions, another must.

Backing tracks – while it’s very easy to find music to jam along to – and this is how I originally taught myself – having custom made backing tracks that are tailored to the course and lessons as you do them is hugely important. Playing along to other music is the easiest way to learn the guitar without a doubt. So even though you can get by with playing to your favourite songs, having custom made jam-along tracks is another must in my book.

A rhythm keeping mechanism – this ties in with the above although it applies to when you’re practicing chords. Keeping time can be tricky at first and with some more complicated chord progressions later on. So a simple beat in the background will accelerate your development and get you on to the more complex stuff a lot quicker. Also you do not want to jam with anyone until your timekeeping is absolutely spot on.

There’s nothing more embarrassing as a guitarist as joining a jam session and not being able to keep time!
